Polymers at interfaces: from a quasi self similar adsorbed layer to a quasi brush first order phase tansition
نویسنده
چکیده
We discuss the adsorption of polymer chains, where all monomers are weakly attracted by the surface, except an endgroup which is strongly attracted by the surface. The equilibrium structure of the adsorbed layer is described using scaling arguments. This structure is intermediate between a self similar adsorbed layer and a brush. A first order phase transition is predicted from a quasi-self similar adsorbed layer to a quasi brush regime. The model is compared with some recent experimental results.

Interplay between Chain Collapse and Microphase Separation in Bottle-Brush Polymers with Two Types of Side Chains
Conformations of a bottle-brush polymer with two types (A,B) of grafted side chains are studied bymolecular dynamics simulations, using a coarse-grained bead-springmodel with side chains of up to N = 50 effective monomers. Varying the solvent quality and the grafting density, the crossover from the “pearl-necklace” structure to dense cylinders is studied. Whereas for small grafting density, Aan...
متن کاملAdsorption dynamics of hydrophobically modified polymers at an air-water interface
The adsorption dynamics of a series of hydrophobically modified polymers, PAAαCn, at the air-water interface is studied by measuring the dynamic surface tension. The PAAαCn are composed of a poly(acrylic acid) backbone grafted with a percentage α of C8 or C12 alkyl moieties, at pH conditions where the PAA backbone is not charged. The observed adsorption dynamics is very slow and follows a logar...
متن کاملSrongly Charged Polymer Brushes
– Charged polymer brushes are layers of surface-tethered chains. Experimental systems are frequently strongly charged. Here we calculate phase diagrams for such brushes in terms of salt concentration ns, grafting density and polymer backbone charge density. Electrostatic stiffening and counterion condensation effects arise which are absent from weakly charged brushes. In various phases chains a...
متن کاملMobility measurements of two kinds of two-dimensional fluids. Methane adsorbed on graphite
2014 The diffusion coefficient of a CH4 submonolayer adsorbed on (0001) graphite is measured as a function of coverage and temperature by quasi-elastic neutron scattering. The experimental data permit us to clearly distinguish two kinds of adsorbed fluids, i.e. a 2D liquid coexisting with a 2D gas and a 2D hypercritical fluid whose density varies continuously with coverage. The mobility disappe...
متن کاملA New Crystal Engineering Technique for Dissolution Enhancement of Poorly Soluble Drugs Combining Quasi-emulsion and Crystallo-co Agglomeration Methods
A target of best dissolution improvement of poorly soluble drugs is a necessity for the success of formulation in industry. The present work describes the preparation, optimization, and evaluation of a new spherical agglomeration technique for glimepiride as a model of poorly soluble drugs. It involved the emulsification of a drug solution containing a dispersed carrier that tailors the crystal...
